Choix Guide: Menorca
laid-back, relaxed Menorca, I love you! a little sleepy, but just what one needs sometimes (esp after you tired yourself by CONQUERING COPENHAGEN !!! )
a numbered MOOD - starting top left + going clockwise...
1. Antics Antigüedades roadside emporium filled with antiques from the island.
2. DINNER with a VIEW @caproigrestaurant - perched high above the bay of Sa Mesquida on the east side of the island, about 10 min from Mahon. Come for the dramatic view, stay for the lobster paella + the clams (pictured here) - simple, perfect, just the way we like it.
3. Cala Binidalí - a fave beach. For how remote it looks, it’s quite easy to access (parking close by, not a far walk down etc). Find a lil spot on sand or rocks, dip, read, repeat 🔁
4. Ca n'Oliver Center of Art + History - 18th century townhouse turned museum in Mahon*. Beautiful + also gives a great history of the island - belonged to one of the primary bourgeoisie families of the 18th + 19th century in Mahon.
5. #TravelCompanion - Choix x @Cocoshopwi Noni pouch <3
6. @MenorcaExperimental - hotel where we stayed (will be returning ASAP !!!) Relatively new “agroturisme" property on an old farm from the @Experimentalgroup. Great vibe, interiors, food (delicious Mediterranean resto), pool, etc. in a countryside setting. The hotel is located on a portion of the Camí de Cavalls** - hike down the trail a bit to their yoga platform for a great class with an INSANE view.
7.@CovaDenXoroi - cliffside night club (literally, built into the side of a cliff). Buy tix for sunset entry for an aperitivo with a VIEW (common theme in this guide). This is prob as sceney as Menorca gets + that’s fine by me.
8. @EsMoliDeFoc - classic Menorcan resto, squid ink paella, old school vibes, most lovely staff.
9. Ciutadella - one of the two cities of the island. More of a classical old-world European city feel than Mahon. Wandered around here post-siesta time, pre-dinner.
10. Mahon Mitica - a cheese so beloved on the island that it seems to be featured on every road sign.
11. @TwoNewYork Striped Terracotta Dress - easy to pack, dress up, dress down, wear on repeat when it's hot hot hot.
12. @HauserWirthMenorca - an outpost of the contemporary gallery on the tiny Illa del Rey off the port of Mahon. Take the ferry shuttle, ramble around the fab gardens surrounding the ruins of an old basilica turned hospital, view some art, and then enjoy a long lovely lunch at @CantinaMenorca.
Notable Notes
SHOPS - boutique at @menorcaexperimental + @CaféCentralMenorca in Ciutadella.
A little itinerary suggestion IF I MAY — explore Mahon in the morning, then venture to Es Grau, a nearby sleepy lil fishing village. Have a seaside lunch at @Tamarindos_menorca + then promptly siesta on the beach.
@MenorcaenLlaut for a boat day — explore the island on a traditional Balearic wooden llaut boat manned by a lovely captain who loves reggae. Snacks, beers, wine provided.
*Mahon = Mao. The city is called Mahon in English + Mao in the Minorcan dialect.
**Camí de Cavalls is the ancient path surrounding the island that people come from all over to hike and bike. Was on our to-do... kept getting moved down the list...luckily Menorca Experimental is located on a portion of CdC, so we “hiked" down a bit of it by default while exploring the property 🙃
Rent a car for prime island exploration !!!
Pay it FORWARD
one can't do it all, so passing along these unconquered recs
^ MINI MOOOOOD @CristineBedfor ^
@CristineBedfor - Boutique Guest House in Mahon w. fantastic interiors. I did swing by to check it out + LOVED! Suggest doing a night or two here in combo with a countryside stay.
Restos - @UlissesMenorca, @ElRaïsMenorca, + @SaLlagosta - a landmark institution in village of Fornells known for their caldereta de llagosta, a traditional Minorcan lobster stew.
@Papillon.Menorca - a shop in Ciutadella that was closed when we went by, but looked great, (same owner as @CaféCentralMenorca ).
